Preparing for Your Visit
All visitors must stay on the designated trails unless you are participating in a scheduled, guided off-trail hike with park staff. Wear boots and bring plenty of water. It gets very hot in the summer and there is no shade. Winter time hiking can be very very windy and colder than expected.
Be prepared for rough hiking, uneven terrain, and scrambling thru grass and brush. Please do not underestimate the terrain. We highly recommend hiking sticks. In the winter, come prepared with windchill blocking layers. In the summer, expect temperatures 10 to 15 degrees hotter in the canyons.
No set path is followed for these trips, so be ready for an adventure. It is intermediate level terrain, and we hike at a moderate pace with stop and go to learn, talk, ask questions, and take photos.
Rain, mud, snow, melting snow, and other acts of Mother Nature are risks of off-trail hikes. Please follow the weather for Scott City or Oakley to be informed; for other weather related or cancellation questions, please call our office at 620-872-2061
